Julie Taymor’s acclaimed film Across the Universe kicks off the 2018 NY Indie Theatre Film Festival January 30. The first screening of the four-day fest will be followed by a talkback with the Tony-winning director.

The festival, which showcases work by downtown theatre artists crossing over into film, officially begins January 31 and runs through February 3 and will include screenings of over 30 short films, documentaries, and web series by New York City artists. Featured artists include Bekah Brunstetter (The Cake, This Is Us), Annie Tippe (Ghost Quartet), Amanda Quaid (Equus), and more.

The festival producer, Marc Stuart Weitz, will moderate the talk with Taymor. Though the director is best known in the theatre world for her production of Disney’s The Lion King, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in November, she began creating theatre in downtown spaces like La MaMa, the Public, Theatre for a New Audience, and more.
