Beowulf Boritt

The Drama Book Shop will host a reading of Tony-winning set designer Beowulf Boritt's new book Transforming Space Over Time: Set Design and Visual Storytelling with Broadway's Legendary Directors October 11 at 7 PM.

Following the reading, Peabody winner Elliott Forrest will host a discussion between Boritt (Act One, POTUSFlying Over Sunset)and Tony-winning directors James Lapine (Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park with George) and Susan Stroman (The ProducersContact), with whom Boritt collaborated on the book.

Transforming Space Over Time goes inside five Broadway productions and one Off-Broadway production from the moment Boritt received the job offer through conceptual development and challenges faced to putting it on the stage. He gives insights into his conversations and collaborations with industry favorites such as James Lapine, Kenny Leon, Hal Prince, Susan Stroman, Jerry Zaks, and Stephen Sondheim. From these different insights, Boritt offers what he learned about shaping the project and creative collaboration.

“I have found Beowulf to be a marvelous colleague, even (or especially) on challenging and complex projects," said Lapine in a statement. "His creativity, ability to solve problems, and collaborative spirit are all in evidence in this useful, entertaining, and inspiring book that is both practical and personal. It is so like him to offer not only his own wisdom, but that of his most experienced and articulate co-conspirators. I’m proud to be one of them.”

Stroman said in her statement, “Beowulf Boritt is one of the most exciting set designers to come along in the last decade. His attention to detail is evident in all of his productions—he becomes a master storyteller through his designs. The same dedication he brings to his glorious work, he also brings to this book. It’s a completely engaging and insightful read.”

Transforming Space Over Time is published by Applause Theatre & Cinema Books, an imprint of Globe Pequot, and was released August 15, 2022.
