Tony nominee Tony Yazbeck will star in Manhattan Concert Productions’ seventh annual presentation in its Broadway Series: the 1997 musical The Scarlet Pimpernel. The one-night-only event, as previously reported, will take place February 18 at 8 PM at David Geffen Hall.
Yazbeck, recently seen in the City Center engagement of A Chorus Line, will star as Percy Blakeney. A Tony nominee for his performance in the revival of On the Town, he has also been seen on Broadway in Gypsy, White Christmas, Chicago, Finding Neverland, and Prince of Broadway.
Yazbeck will join the previously announced Tony nominee Laura Osnes (Bandstand, Cinderella) as Marguerite, Tony nominee Norm Lewis (Les Misérables, Porgy and Bess) as Chauvelin, Bandstand and Newsies star Corey Cott as Armand, Dana Costello (Finding Neverland, Jekyll and Hyde) as Marie, and Jersey Boys and Waitress leading man Drew Gehling as the Prince of Wales/Robespierre.
Gabriel Barre will direct the evening with musical direction by Jason Howland. The performance will feature a chorus of over 200 singers from across the country as well as the New York City Chamber Orchestra. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
With music by Frank Wildhorn and lyrics and book by Nan Knighton, The Scarlet Pimpernel is based on Baroness Orczy’s 20th-century novel of the same name, which takes place at the peak of the French Revolution and the fight for liberty, equality, and fraternity. Set in England and France, the musical tells the story of English nobleman Sir Percy Blakeney, who adopts a secret identity to battle the forces of evil during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution.
The musical made its Broadway debut at the Minskoff Theatre in 1997 and ran through January 2000 with two additional incarnations—including a move to the Neil Simon Theatre.
The Scarlet Pimpernel joins MCP’s previous Broadway Series concert performances, which include Crazy for You, The Secret Garden, Parade, Titanic, and Ragtime.
