News Tonys Make History Early in the Evening A bit of history was made with the first Tony Award of the evening.

The Best Orchestrations Tony Award was a tie — the first tie since Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Who's Tommy tied for Best Score in the early 1990s. This year the tie was between Next to Normal (Tom Kitt and Michael Starobin) and Billy Elliot (Martin Koch).

Tony winners Brian Stokes Mitchell and Laura Benanti presented the Best Orchestrations Award during the pre-CBS telecast Creative Arts Awards ceremony.
