News   Torch Theatre to Present "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" Live Onstage
Minneapolis' Torch Theater will try to "turn the world on with [a] smile" in September when it presents ten benefit performances of the Emmy-winning TV series "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

The Associated Press reports that the Minnesota theatre company will re-create three episodes of the seventies series during the Sept. 11-26 performances at Theater Garage. One of the three episodes is the famed "Chuckles Bites the Dust" program, which featured star Moore laughing uncontrollably and subsequently sobbing during Chuckles the Clown's funeral.

Torch Theater founder and artistic director Stacia Rice will play single working gal Mary Richards, the role immortalized by Mary Tyler Moore.

According to the Torch Theater website, the cast will also feature Patrick Coyle, Julie Madden, Katharine Moeller, Seth Patterson, Mo Perry, Matt Sciple, Edwin Strout and Lauren Vlach. (Linda Kelsey will play Sue Ann Nivens during the final weekend of performances.)

"It has been called one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced in US television history," according to Torch Theater. "It won three straight Emmy awards for Outstanding Comedy. It was set in Minneapolis. A single hat toss has been locked into our collective memories. We bring it to the stage. Live. And hilarious."

Performances will benefit the Torch Theatre. For ticket information visit
