The film stars Academy Award winner Helen Mirren as Prospera, a deposed duke with magical powers who lives with her daughter on a remote island. The starry cast also features Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, Reeve Carney, Felicity Jones and Tom Conti.
Taymor, a Tony winner for The Lion King, will next be represented on Broadway with Spider-Man Turn off the Dark, the upcoming musical starring Tempest co-star Reeve Carney in the title role.
The Tempest, which was recently seen at The Venice Film Festival and The New York Film Festival, will open in New York and Los Angeles Dec. 10 and nationwide Dec. 17. To view the trailer, look below:
