Music Theatre International will handle licensing for Trevor: The Musical. With a book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis, the work played an Off-Broadway run last year. A film of a stage performance from the Off-Broadway production is set to release on Disney+ June 24, the same day the musical's cast album drops.

The work is based on the 1995 Academy Award-winning short film Trevor, written by Celeste Lecesne, directed by Peggy Rajski, and produced by Randy Stone and Rajski. Set in 1981, the fictional story follows musical theatre-obsessed middle schooler Trevor Nelson who has to forge his own path after an embarrassing incident at school suddenly gets him the wrong kind of notoriety. The original film would go on to inspire The Trevor Project, a crisis and suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQIA+ youth founded by Rajski, Stone, and Lecesne in 1998. The musical played a world premiere run at Chicago's Writers Theatre in 2017 before its 2021 Off-Broadway bow.

"Writing Trevor has been a labor of love," shares Collins and Davis in a statement. "Equal parts deeply personal and inspiringly universal, it contains a message that is as urgent today as it was decades ago. Over the course of our creative process, Trevor’s story has continually pulled an incredibly passionate and talented community into its ever-expanding orbit. We are so thrilled to be adding MTI to that family in order to bring the story to wider audiences and further amplify Trevor’s joyful voice and spirit!"

"Seeing the show in New York last year, it was clear that this was not only a funny and moving crowd-pleaser, but a show that actors would have a great time performing," adds MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen. "Trevor delivers an important message of friendship, acceptance, and the need to be true to oneself in a lighthearted but meaningful way. There are countless Trevors—and audiences—who will love this incredible musical."

Licensing rights for Trevor: The Musical are currently restricted, but those interested in producing the work can sign up to be notified when it becomes available at MTIShows.com.
