News Twelve Ophelias Opens in Brooklyn's McCarren Park Pool July 24 Twelve Ophelias, a Hamlet-inspired work from the Woodshed Collective, officially opens at McCarren Park Pool July 24. All performances are free.

Woodshed Collective co-artistic director Teddy Bergman (Hell House) stages the work that features an Appalachian shantytown created within the confines of the empty McCarren Park Pool. The production began performances July 11.

The cast includes Ben Beckley, Kate Benson, Pepper Binkley, Dan Cozzens, Jocelyn Kuritsky, Preston Martin and Grace McLean.

Twelve Ophelias also feature the roots/bluegrass bad, The Jones Street Boys, who have created original music for the production.

Penned by Caridad Svich, Twelve Ophelias, press notes state, "centers on Hamlet's Ophelia coming back to life, out of the water, to try to overcome her history and forge a new destiny for herself. She finds herself in an Appalachian Elsinore, Denmark by way of Deliverance—where Gertrude runs a brothel, Hamlet and Horatio slum it, and nothing is what it seems. In this squarely American and gritty interpretation of the Hamlet myth, Twelve Ophelias asks how it is possible to break old cycles and start afresh when the past so completely permeates your life."

The creative team also includes Nicola Bullock (choreography), Gabe Evansohn (set design), Emily Fishbaine (musical director), Jessica Pabst (costume design), Adam Rihacek (fight choreography) and Jerad Schomer (lighting design). Founded by alumni of Vassar College, the mission of Woodshed Collective is to "create a tangible, immersive world" for audiences, by creating interactive performance pieces in which all members of the Collective are involved in "all aspects of production, from concept development to direction and design."

Performances of Twelve Ophelias take place at 8 PM July 24, 26 and 30-31. August performances include Aug. 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, 14, 16 and 20-22.

All performances take place within the McCarren Park Pool, located at Lorimer and Bayard Streets, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
