The final presentation of the season will be a new play, to be directed by Gil Cates, that will be announced shortly.
Geffen artistic director Randall Arney helms Jeffreys’ I Just Stopped By to See the Man, Sept. 9-Oct. 19. Set in the 1970s, the play finds a legendary blues man — believed dead by many — living peacefully with his daughter until one day when an English rock star stumbles into their lives.
Writer Sandra Tsing Loh performs her own Sugar Plum Fairy for Geffen audiences Nov. 11-Dec. 21. David Schweizer directs the tale of a young girl who dreams of dancing in the lead role of "The Nutcracker" but ends up in the chorus.
Los Angeles playwright Bryan Davidson will see his War Music take to the Geffen stage, Jan. 13-Feb. 22, 2004. The play is based on real events in the lives of three composers — Frank Bridge, Anton Webern, and Olivier Messiaen — linked together by war. Jessica Kubzansky directs the work.
Steve Martin's The Underpants — an adaptation of Carl Sternheim's Die Hose — will play at the Playhouse March 9-April 18. In the work, a woman's underpants fall down in public while attending a parade for the king and a newfound fame comes to the woman.
