UPDATED: Disney Says List of Character Names on Into the Woods Film Website Was "Not Accurate" | Playbill

News UPDATED: Disney Says List of Character Names on Into the Woods Film Website Was "Not Accurate" The official website for the Disney film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods has removed the previously published list of character names from its site, following reports that character names had been altered for the film.

According to a previous posting on the Disney website, names were changed to correlate with Disney fairytales — Rapunzel's Prince to Flynn Rider, Cinderella's Prince to Prince Charming and Cinderella's Stepmother to Lady Tremaine.

Following reports by numerous websites, including Playbill.com, Disney removed the cast list. A representative for Disney told Playbill.com by email that the list was "not accurate."

A statement issued by a Disney spokesperson reads, "The character names in the film 'Into the Woods' are faithful to the original material. Some incorrect names were published online in error and have now been corrected."

The character of the Mysterious Man, played by Simon Russell Beale, remains changed as the Baker's Father, eliminating any element of surprise that the Mysterious Man and the Baker were related.
