"We Are Marshall" and "Charlie's Angels" director McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol), who will direct the film musical, told eonline.com, "We're talking to Lea Michele because she made the role of Wendla famous and we'll see if that pans out and works with the timing of her schedule on ['Glee'].... When I first got turned onto the show she was in it so it's her voice that echoes in my heart. I really think she's wonderful and we'll see where it takes us."
The director added, "[The film is] very similar to the [stage] production. We're probably going to shoot it in Eastern Europe and it's a very true adaptation of what it is with a little Baz Luhrman thrown in."
Michele, however, told EW.com that she is not currently in negotiations, although there have been previous discussions about the possibility of reprising her role on screen. The actress said in a statement, "Spring Awakening is so special to me, as is the character Wendla. We have discussed this as a possibility, and we’ll see what happens.” Her representative added, “There were initial talks about this project. However, there is nothing confirmed at this time.”
In addition to directing and producing feature films, including "Terminator Salvation," McG has directed music videos for Smash Mouth, Offspring. He has also co-written and produced albums for Sugar Ray.
Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik. Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."
