In a press statement, director Jamie Lloyd commented, "Having attracted a diverse audience of all ages at the St. James earlier this year, I'm bursting to bring our production of this brilliantly off-kilter musical comedy to the West End, where I hope we'll make an even bigger splash. I'm delighted to return to the Apollo Theatre – the perfect home for our energetic and anarchic cast to run riot in. So, a big thank you to Nica Burns."
With music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, the production is designed by Soutra Gilmour with choreography by Ann Yee, lighting design by Adam Silverman, sound design by Terry Jardine & Nick Lidster, wig & hair design by Richard Mawbey, fight direction by Kate Waters, orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and musical supervision & direction by Alan Williams.
It is produced by Julian Stoneman Associates and The Araca Group.
Casting is still to be announced. At the St. James, the company was led by Richard Fleeshman and Jenna Russell as Bobby Strong and Penelope Pennywise, respectively, with Jonathan Slinger as Officer Lockstock, Cory English as Old Man Strong and Hot Baldes Harry, Katie Bernstein (as Little Becky Two Shoes/Mrs. Millennium), Madeleine Harland (as Soupy Sue/Cladwell’s Secretary), Rosanna Hyland (as Hope Cladwell), Julie Jupp (as Old Woman/Josephine Strong), Mark Meadows (as Senator Fipp), Joel Montague (as Male Swing 1), Jo Napthine (as Female Swing 2) and Matthew Seadon-Young (Ras obbie The Stockfish/UGC Executive 1). Also in the cast were Marc Elliott (as Mr. McQueen), Karis Jack (Little Sally), Aaron Lee Lambert (Billy Boy Bill), Jeff Nicholson (Tiny Tom), Adam Pearce (Officer Barrel), with Chris Bennett, Alasdair Buchan and Charlotte Scott as swings.
The show was originally produced Off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway's Henry Miller Theatre, where it ran for 965 performances from 2001-2004. It was nominated for ten Tony Awards, and won for Best Book, Best Score and Best Direction.
