Following an acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a sold-out London transfer, the U.S. premiere of Eight is presented as part of the 2009 COIL Festival of new works at PS 122. Eight began performances Jan. 6 and will continue through Jan. 25.
Playwright Hickson directs a cast including Alice Bonifacio, Simon Ginty, Ishbel McFarlane, Holly McLay, Solomon Mousley, Henry Peters, Gwennie Von Einseidel and Michael Whitham.
"In a decade when the shock factor is hard to come by and the media is scrabbling around in the dirt to find the not-yet-exploited," press notes state, "Eight's characters come from the fringes of a society that has been invaded by normal. From life-partners hanging by Hermès scarves to finding friendship in morgues, Eight looks at the refugees created by the dissolution of social, sexual and national boundaries, resulting in hard-hitting drama that has dared to confront the toughest of topical issues.
2009 COIL productions also include The Crumb Trail, Jester of Tonga, Lewis Forever: Freak the Room, Pent Up: A Revenge Dance, Welcome to Nowhere (bullet hole road), Trash Warfare, Geisha, Holiday House, Blind Spot, The Passion Project and Architecting.
