Variety reports that Random House has acquired the biography, which will feature the full participation of the composer of Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods and more.

Entitled "How Did It Happen: The Life and Career of Stephen Sondheim," the new tome will be based on in-depth interviews with Sondheim as well as chats with his wide circle of friends. The Broadway composer has also granted Benedict access to his personal papers.

The 84-year-old Sondheim was also the subject of Meryle Secrest's 1998 book "Stephen Sondheim: A Life." A two-volume collection of his lyrics was released in 2011.

The first draft of "How Did It Happen" is expected by December 2017.
