Broadway News Video: Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells Celebrate First Performance of Gutenberg! on Broadway

Previews began with a sold-out performance September 15.

Comedy duo and Tony nominees Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells returned to Broadway September 15 for the first preview of Gutenberg! The Musical! At curtain call, the actors celebrated the sold-out performance with matching trucker hats reading "First Performance Ever," plus a photo with the audience. Check out footage of the curtain call above.

The musical's Broadway premiere run is now underway, with an official opening night set for October 12. The limited engagement will run through January 28, 2024. Scott Brown and Anthony King penned the show, with Tony winner Alex Timbers at the helm.

Gad and Rannells, who are reuniting after appearing together in the original Broadway cast of The Book of Mormon, star as Bud and Doug. The show-within-a-show follows the pair as they try to write a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. Convinced their show is ready for Broadway, they hold a backers' performance in which they play all the parts, aided by hundreds of baseball caps adorned with character names.

“It's a love letter to musicals as performed by two guys who think they know a lot about musicals based on seeing very few musicals," Gad told Playbill as part of our Fall Preview.  “So much of art in the 21st century, is driven by a communal cynicism. But these guys are these innocent vessels of pureness and joy…This show beats you over the head with earnestness, and you start off laughing at it until you get sucked into it, and then you fall in love with it.”
