Playbill Goes Fringe Video: See the Awe-Inspiring Acrobatics of Sophie's Surprise 29th

This circus show is like if '90s teen movies contained acrobats.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the world, with nearly 3,500 shows. This year, Playbill is in Edinburgh for the entire month in August for the festival and we’re taking you with us. Follow along as we cover every single aspect of the Fringe, aka our real-life Brigadoon!

Have you ever seen a circus show and thought, "You know what this needs? Teenage angst!" Well, if you're a fan of '90s teen dramas, then Sophie's Surprise 29th is the show for you. In the production, a member of the audience is chosen to be Sophie. As a birthday present, the various acrobats do aerial tricks, ride on unicycles, and spin dangerously fast on roller skates for Sophie. To get a sense of what it is we're talking about, watch the video above, shot and edited by Playbill's Video Editor Ethan Treiman.

Sure, these characters are ostensibly in their 20s, but all the teen drama tropes are there: the goth in love with the popular girl, the glasses-wearing girl who is secretly gorgeous, Twilight fanfiction (well, that last part wasn't in any teen dramas, but it will tug at millennial heartstrings). The show is also the inaugural production of Three Legged Race Productions, and features performers from Cirque du Soleil, Britain's Got Talent, Gogglebox, and more.

Sophie's Surprise 29th is the perfect show for millennials, or anyone, who loves circus with a storyline. Come for the circus tricks, stay for the audience singalong of Robbie Williams' "Angels."

Sophie's Surprise 29th runs at Underbelly Circus Hub in the Meadows through August 26.
