Playbill Goes Fringe Video: See Why Public—The Musical Is a Sold-Out Hit

This new musical sold out its run and got glowing reviews at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the world, with more than 3,500 shows. This year, Playbill is in Edinburgh for the entire month in August for the festival and we’re taking you with us. Follow along as we cover every single aspect of the Fringe, aka our real-life Brigadoon!

Every new musical that premieres at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe hopes that it will be the next SIX: the musical from an unknown creative team that, from those humble beginnings, will go onto a bigger life on the West End or on Broadway. This year's Fringe contained multiple musicals that are hoping to ascend to become musical theatre royalty: Hello Kitty Must DieKathy and Stella Solve a Murder, DuskPublic, and many more.

We won't make predictions on who will be the next SIX. But Playbill was lucky enough to be able to capture one of those hopeful musicals, Public, on video. We have the songs from the show in the exclusive video above, filmed and edited by Playbill's Ethan Treiman.

The concept for Public may sound too strange for a musical: it's about four strangers who are trapped in an all-gender bathroom. But like Urinetown before it, a scatological concept is sometimes the basis for brilliance. As Playbill's Jeffrey Vizcaíno wrote in his Playbill Pick review of Public: "Kyla Stroud and the Stroud & Notes team have really created something unique and special, and have assembled a cast that is creating musical theatre magic every day at Pleasance’s Courtyard. The only question I had leaving the show was, 'How soon can I get this cast recording?'"

Watch the video above and keep an eye out for Public. The show finishes its sold-out Fringe run on August 28 but we won't be surprised if we see it on the boards again very soon. And when it does, you'll want to book a ticket immediately.
