The role of Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's Master Class has been for some time one of the most popular for female leads.

In Vienna, Andrea Eckert has stepped into the footsteps of actresses like Zoe Caldwell, Patti LuPone, Faye Dunaway and Dixie Carter. Meisterklasse Maria Callas, as its German title goes, opened at the Volkstheater on Feb. 19, 1997, and has been performed in repertory more than 60 times since then.

Under Arie Ziegler's direction, Andreas Eckert as Maria Callas rules over a classroom consisting of two sopranos Sophie de Palma (Claudia Guhlke/Josephine Pilar) and Sharon Graham (Roberta Cortese/Eva Steinsky), tenor Anthony Candolino (Peter Leussink) and pianist Manny Weinstock (Ottokar Prochazka). John Lloyd Davies is the set designer, Birgit Hutter the costume designer in the Volkstheater's production of McNally's Tony-winning play.

April performances of Meisterklasse Maria Callas: 1, 16, 26. Tickets can be ordered at +43-1-523 27 76.
