News VINTAGE PLAYBILL: Annie, Starring Andrea McArdle and Dorothy Loudon (1977) In celebration of Annie's return to Broadway – now in previews at the Palace Theatre – the Playbill Vault takes a look back at the musical's original run.

Annie premiered on April 21, 1977, at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon). The production dominated the 1977 Tonys, earning awards for Best Musical, Score and Book. Andrea McArdle received a Tony nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Musical, but the award went to her co-star, Dorothy Loudon, who played Miss Hannigan. The Tonys also honored Theoni V. Aldredge's costume design, David Mitchell's scenic design and Peter Gennaro's choreography.

This vintage Playbill from May 1977 features the full original cast and production photos by Martha Swope. The production closed six years later on Jan. 2, 1983, following 2,377 performances.
