The new musical comedy by Ken Ludwig used the songbook of Ira and George Gershwin, a formula later revisited by Nice Work If You Can Get It, now running at the Imperial Theatre.
Jodi Benson, Harry Groener and Bruce Adler offered Tony-nominated performances. The cast also featured future Tony winners Beth Leavel, Casey Nicholaw and Michele Pawk. The production marked the Broadway debut of Susan Stroman's choreography.
In his New York Times review, Frank Rich praised Ludwig's frothy tribute to golden age musicals ("His book has no intellectual content, and wants none") and hailed the return of the Broadway musical. "A riotously entertaining show," he wrote, has "uncorked the American musical's classic blend of music, laughter, dancing, sentiment and showmanship with a freshness and confidence rarely seen during the Cats decade."
A critical and commercial smash, Crazy for You went on to win the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical. Susan Stroman was honored for her choreography, and William Ivey Long won for his costume design. The production would enjoy a four-year run on Broadway.
