The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1981 and enjoyed a warm critical reception; the New York Times called it a "delightful" revue, and critic Mel Gussow claimed it was "as refreshing as an ice cold beer after a bowl of five-alarm chili."

The show transferred to the Princess Theatre on Broadway Feb. 4, 1982. The cast, who wrote the majority of the music and lyrics, comprised John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann.

The production received a 1982 Tony Award nomination for Best Musical, but lost to Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit's Nine. It ran for 573 performances before ending its Broadway run  June 18, 1983.
