Viola Davis Adds BAFTA Award to Tony for Fences; La La Land Also Scores Major Wins | Playbill

Film & TV News Viola Davis Adds BAFTA Award to Tony for Fences; La La Land Also Scores Major Wins The BAFTA Awards presented February 12 are the U.K. equivalent to the Oscars

This year's BAFTA Awards—the U.K.'s answer to the Oscars—presented February 12 in a ceremony at London's Royal Albert Hall saw Viola Davis named Best Supporting Actress (the same category for which she is Oscar nominated) for reprising her Tony winning performance as Rose Maxson in Denzel Washington's new film version of August Wilson's Tony and Pulitzer prize winning play Fences.

Broadway playwright Kenneth Lonergan (This Is Our Youth) won the BAFTA for Original Screeenplay for Manchester by the Sea.

La La Land, which led the list of nominations with 11 nods, was named Best Film, with major wins, too, for Emma Stone (Broadway's Cabaret) as Best Actress, director Damien Chazelle, and composer Justin Hurtwitz, the latter named for Best Original Music, for which the lyrics were provided by the Broadway songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen).

Mel Brooks, whose Broadway musical Young Frankenstein has recently announced that it will open in the West End this year, has won the annual BAFTA Fellowship, to acknowledge his contribution to cinema.
