Gemma Arterton and Eva Green have been cast in the new film Vita & Virginia, based on Eileen Atkins’ play that chronicles the romance between writers Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Green, whose film credits include White Bird in a Blizzard and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, has been cast as literary icon Woolf; Arterton, seen in Their Finest, will play author Sackville-West. British director Chanya Button will direct the film from a screenplay by Atkins.

No production timeline has been announced.

Vita & Virginia was adapted into a two-person play by Atkins from the personal letters of Woolf and Sackville-West. The two, brought together in 1922, embarked on a passionate affair that lasted 20 years, ending only when Woolf committed suicide in 1941.

The show played Off-Broadway at the Union Square Theater in 1994 starring Vanessa Redgrave with Atkins herself as Woolf. It was then revived at the Zipper Factory Theater in 2008 starring Kathleen Chalfant and Patricia Elliott.

Woolf is well-known for her novels Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, among many others. One of the wealthiest women in England, Sackville-West was a prolific novelist, writing almost 50 books.
