News Wallace Shawn Appears in Carmilla at New York's La Mama E.T.C., April 26 Wallace Shawn ("My Dinner With Andre," "The Princess Bride") will perform April 26 in the current La MaMa E.T.C. production of the 1970 chamber opera Carmilla. The role currently played by John Kelly runs through April 27.

Written by Wilford Leach and composed by Ben Johnston, the chamber opera is based on the 1872 novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu with the same name. La MaMa remounts this production with most of the original company, and musical direction by Zizi Mueller, in its Annex Theater. Ellen Stewart has re-directed the original staging by Wilford Leach. Shawn played the Mountebank in the opera's 1976 revival. The actor has also penned a number of plays of his own, including Aunt Dan and Lemon, The Fever and The Designated Mourner.
