The NAACP Image Awards were presented in Los Angeles during a live telecast Feb. 14. Among the theatre folk who were recognized for their work are Vanessa Williams for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for "Ugly Betty," Chandra Wilson for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for "Grey's Anatomy" and "Ugly Betty"'s America Ferrera for Best Actress in a Comedy.
Denzel Washington won Best Actor in a Motion Picture for "The Great Debaters" – a film he also directed. "The Great Debaters" also took the prize for Outstanding Motion Picture.
As previously announced, theatre veteran Ruby Dee was honored with the NAACP Chairman's Award. Dee was also nominated for an Image and Academy Award for her work in the film "American Gangster."
Queen Latifah took home the prize for Best Actress in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Dramatic Special for "Life Support." In addition, playwright and actress Regina Taylor earned the Best Actress in a Drama Series prize for "The Unit."
