The comedian appeared on The Tonight Show to talk about the upcoming musical adaption of Mr. Saturday Night, centering on an insult comic character he created in 1984.

Comic legend Billy Crystal stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon March 17 to discuss his Broadway return this season in the musical adaptation of his film Mr. Saturday Night

The musical's story centers on Buddy Young, Jr., a borscht-belt insult comic—played by Crystal— whose abrasive ego eclipses his success and alienates his family.

Watch the video above as Crystal explains the creation of the character in 1984 for an HBO special, through many appearances on Saturday Night Live (including a clip of Buddy roasting Johnny Cash), to the 1992 movie Mr. Saturday Night, and now the upcoming musical adaptation of that film.

Randy Graff, David Paymer, Shoshana Bean, and Chasten Harmon are set to star along with Crystal in the musical, featuring a score by Jason Robert Brown and Amanda Green and a book by Crystal, Lowell Ganz, and Babaloo Mandel, the film's writers.

The production will begin previews at Broadway's Nederlander Theatre March 29 ahead of an April 27 opening night.
