“I've been dying to get back there,” he said of the Public, where Hamilton debuted Off-Broadway. Artistic Director Oskar Eustis finally sent him the script for a project he could not refuse.
“Suzan-Lori Parks has been my favorite playwright since I was 18 years old,” said Diggs.
While filming TNT’s Snowpiercer, Diggs read his script during some down time in his trailer. “By the time I got to the end of the play, I'm in my trailer pacing back and forth. Just like, ‘Oh my god, oh my god.,’ I have so much energy; I've never read anything like it before.
“It is about a group of friends who have been together for a long time ... due to circumstances are forced to really deeply examine race relations in this country in a very particular way,” he explained. “It’s a really beautiful story about four people who love each other so much. It is hilarious and heartbreaking.”
White Noise begins performances March 5 for a run through April 14. The play, directed by Eustis, also stars Sheria Irving, Thomas Sadoski, and Zoë Winters.
Diggs has also been working on new music with his writing partner Rafael Casal and debuted part of the currently unreleased single “At This Point.” Watch the full video interview and performance above.
