For anyone following Hamilton news, it’s not new information that Javier Muñoz, the original alternate for the title part, took over the role full time when creator Lin-Manuel Miranda left after the July 9 performance. But, fewer know the story of Muñoz’s journey.
The star tells CBS This Morning about how he first came to Hamilton, his friendship with Miranda and what it was like to perform for the President and entertainment royalty. He admits that when the President came (and when Jay Z and Beyoncé attended a performance), he expected Miranda to go on; but, Muñoz performed as scheduled. On a more personal note, Muñoz discussed his recent battle with cancer and living with HIV. “My family is my root,” he said on the morning show.
Having been with Hamilton since its first rumblings in 2011, Muñoz is enjoying newfound media attention since inhabiting the role full time. He appeared on Charlie Rose August 4.
