On February 13, the latest tribute to Broadway’s Rent hits the small screen in an episode of ABC’s new comedy series Schooled, a spinoff of the hit The Goldbergs.

When William Penn High School’s Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) tells music teacher Lainey (AJ Michalka) that athletics rule the school, Lainey resolves to stage Rent and prove that the arts are as significant as sports. In the exclusive clip above, the musical theatre kid and the jock share a surprise duet on “What You Own.”

The episode was inspired by executive producer Adam F. Goldberg’s own love for the Jonathan Larson musical. “I’ve had so many wonderful opportunities to share some personal memories and honor many of my heroes,” he tells Playbill. Now, he counts Larson among those tributaries.

“When I attended NYU in 1996, Rent premiered on Broadway. It was the first time I had seen something written so brilliantly for my generation. Thanks to the $20 lottery seats you could try to get, Rent was the only Broadway show accessible to broke college students like me in the ’90s,” Goldberg explains. “My college roommate, Kevin Leffler, who is now a producer on Schooled, was a full-fledged Rent-head and would drag me along to camp out for tickets. I ended up seeing the musical at least ten times with him.

“One of the great experiences about our spinoff, Schooled, is I now get to write about my real-life favorite teachers in the ’90s,” he continues. “I’m beyond proud that I get to show my love for Jonathan Larson’s Rent with an episode of Schooled. ... I loved writing an episode that truly shows the impact of this musical.”

The episode, “Money for Rent,” airs February 13 at 8:30PM ET.
