Video Watch: Lindsay Mendez Corrects Jonathan Groff's Wrong Notes Onstage in Merrily We Roll Along

The trio of stars leading the Broadway Sondheim revival stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Merrily We Roll Along stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez dropped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert October 23 to talk about starring in the Stephen Sondheim revival on Broadway and their on and off-stage friendship.

According to Radcliffe, Mendez has become the trio's de facto vocal captain, using her eyes to tell Groff when his note is under pitch in a moment of three-part harmony. Yes, friends, even Broadway stars sometimes have a little trouble getting to the right pitch—especially when they're tricky Sondheim pitches! Watch the group talk about this and more (including what it's like to perform for the late Sondheim himself) above.

Earlier on in the program, we learn that the three have their own unique pre-show rituals. They range from the annoying—Radcliffe obsessively running his patter song "Franklin Shepard Inc."—to the haphazard—apparently Groff has a penchant for arriving at the theatre mere moments before showtime. Find out more below.

Merrily We Roll Along is back on Broadway for its first-ever Broadway revival, which opened October 10. Read the reviews here. The limited run is set to continue through March 24, 2024.

Back leading the production after starring in the 2022 Off-Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop are Radcliffe as Charley Kringas, Groff as Franklin Shepard, Mendez as Mary Flynn, Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie Carnegie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Shepard, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephson. Max Rackenberg and Brady Wagner are sharing the role of Frank Jr.

Maria Friedman is back directing, with choreography by Tim Jackson and orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick. With a book by George Furth—adapted from the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play of the same name—and a score by Sondheim, the musical tracks the lives of three friends navigating the entertainment industry over three decades in reverse chronological order. Sondheim's score includes such songs as "Old Friends," "Now You Know," "Franklin Shepard, Inc.," "Good Thing Going," and "Not a Day Goes By."
