Are you tryin' to tell us that you've never heard the song "Corn Puddin'"? Well, we can fix that. Check out the Apple TV+ singalong video above of the now Emmy-nominated song from the pilot episode of the musical comedy series Schmigadoon!
In a recent online panel for The Society of Composers & Lyricists, songwriter Cinco Paul was asked if the subject of the song had always been corn pudding, or if he'd ever stewed over other down-home delicacies for the track from the pilot episode, titled "Puddin'." But it was always corn pudding. It was the first idea, and it stuck. And now that first, great idea has been nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
Created by Paul and Ken Daurio, Schmigadoon! lovingly lampoons the Golden Age of musical theatre in the six-episode series, starring Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael Key as a modern-day couple who stumble upon a magical, musical town in the mist. The Broadway-star-studded series features Tony winners Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Aaron Tveit, and Jane Krakowski, Tony nominee and Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, The Light in the Piazza alum Dove Cameron, Avenue Q favorite Ann Harada, Chicago alum Jaime Camil, and Portlandia star Fred Armisen.
Season 1 of Schmigadoon! premiered July 16, 2021. It will return for a second season, re-christened Schmicago and shifting its references to the musicals of the '60s and '70s.
In addition to Paul's nod for for "Corn Puddin'," the series also garnered Emmy nominations for Outstanding Music Composition for Christopher Willis; Outstanding Production Design For a Narrative Program for Bo Welch, Don Macaulay, and Carol Lavallee; and Outstanding Choreography For Scripted Programming for Tony winner Christopher Gattelli.
