Video Watch: Tiler Peck Breaks Down Her Scene in The Hip Hop Nutcracker

The holiday classic gets a modern twist in the Disney+ original special.

New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck has been a part of the holiday classic The Nutcracker for 18 years. This year she performs in two different versions: George Balanchine’s at the David H. Koch Theatre and the Disney+ original special, the latter entitled The Hip Hop Nutcracker.

Inspired by the live stage version, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is co-created by Jennifer Weber, choreographer of Broadway’s & Juliet and KPOP. The updating of Tchaikovsky’s holiday ballet sets the action in the streets of New York City at a New Year’s Eve block party.

“Being a ballerina isn't just one thing, and I think that's what's incredible about this version. You get to see so much of my versatility and just the dynamics of what a ballerina can be,” shares Peck, who plays the role of the Toy Ballerina in the special now streaming on Disney+. Watch the video above as she breaks down her spellbinding scene.

Directed by Nikki Parsons, the cast also includes Mikhail Baryshnikov, KidaTheGreat AKA Kida Burns, the Jabbawockeez as magical snowflakes, and more.

Produced by Done+Dusted, executive producers are Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, Weber, Eva Price and NappyTabs. Choreographers include NappyTabs, Hokuto “HOK” Konishi, Phillip Chbeeb, Makenzie Dustman, Luther Brown, D-Trix, and Weber.
