On the January 26 episode of ABC’s long-running The View, host Whoopi Goldberg goes behind the scenes of Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway.
Goldberg spent time with James Monroe Iglehart, who won a Tony for his performance as the Genie in the show, at a previously recorded performance. As previously announced, Iglehart will depart the show after the February 19 performance. Major Attaway, who has been the standby for the role since January 2016, will assume the role full time beginning February 21.
Goldberg stole Iglehart’s entrance in the show and then performed a bit about Iglehart leaving the show in a few weeks.
Iglehart moves to the Richard Rodgers Theatre to star as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton.
The pair took an onstage selfie to document the occasion.
On the episode, Iglehart and Attaway joined the ladies around the table after airing the behind-the-scenes clip. As the new Genie, Attaway granted a pair of tickets to the show to each member of the studio audience. Iglehart talked about how the role of the Genie is mythical and can be played be any actor regardless of gender.
