Producer Barry Weissler says that efficiency guided the producers’ recent decision not to remount a tour of Chicago after it completes its European tour dates.
Chita Rivera had been asked to do domestic dates in Minneapolis, Long Beach and Boston (see Oct. 5 story), but recent reports indicated that Rivera would not be doing Chicago after all.
Rivera’s press agent, Merle Frimark told Playbill On-Line, “The Weisslers asked her to do the three cities and she agreed; then they canceled the dates in those cities so it was their decision. It really had nothing to do with Chita.”
“That’s right,” Barry Weissler said. Speaking with Playbill On-Line on the afternoon of Nov. 30—the opening date of the producer’s latest show, Seussical—Weissler said, “We’re in Europe with that company now and we just felt it was more efficient to close the show after that because it would be too much of a hassle to get all the equipment back and to remount it at this time.”
Weissler had no definitive comment on the show's touring future and did not offer any hint of plans for new national tour dates for the jazzy hit musical revival at this time.
