The producers have stated that it will transfer to another venue after it closes, but have not announced yet which one.
After originally opening at Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre in April 2009, after a prior Off-Broadway run, it transferred in March 2011 to the smaller Helen Hayes Theatre in 2011, where it is still running. At the time, producer Matthew Weaver told the New York Times, "On a macro level, we think this move allows us to run on Broadway for another two years, if not longer, and should allow us to stay open in time for the Rock of Ages movie to open in 2012. It will be a big help to the movie if the musical is still running on Broadway, and vice versa."
That film version has now come (and quickly gone), but Rock of Ages still rocks on. There's speculation that a similar downsizing is being planned for the U.K. edition, with the Duchess Theatre in the frame for the move.
Rock of Ages is written by Chris D'Arienzo, directed by Kristin Hanggi and choreographed by Kelly Devine.
