News West Side Story, Take Me Out Big Winners in First Kevin Kline Awards in St. Louis The first annual Kevin Kline Awards, recognizing excellence in the St. Louis professional theatre community, were handed out March 20 — including six presented by Kline himself.

The Muny's staging of West Side Story snagged five Klines, followed by four awards to the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis production of Take Me Out.

Ken Page, who, like Kline and host Jason Danieley, has roots in St. Louis, won a Kline for his work in The Muny's Jesus Christ Superstar (he played King Herod in summer 2005).

In this first-ever Kline Awards, there were ties in two categories.

Both Michelle Hand (Separate Tables) and Nancy Lewis (Going To See the Elephant) were both recognized in the category of Outstanding Female Actor in a Play.

Both Kevin Backstrom (West Side Story) and Michael Hamilton (Footloose) were recognized in the category of Outstanding Director of a Musical. The ceremony was held in the restored Robert's Orpheum Theatre (formerly the American Theatre).
