News Westport Country Playhouse Adds Musical The Immigrant to Fall Line-Up The musical The Immigrant, which played Off-Broadway in 2004, will be reborn at the Westport Country Playhouse Oct. 27-Nov. 12.

The show will be directed by WCP's incoming artistic director Tazewell Thompson, who will succeed Joanne Woodward on Jan. 1, 2006. The intimate musical is by the original work's playwright Mark Harelik (libretto), Sarah Knapp (lyrics) and Steven M. Alper (music).

The play and musical are both inspired by the story of playwright-actor Harelik's grandfather, Haskell, an Eastern European Jew who settled not in the teeming tenements of the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the early 20th century, but in Texas as part of the little-known Galveston Plan for immigration.

In the play, as in life, Haskell was befriended by a banker and his wife, and ending up prospering.

No cast has been announced.
