Not every show starts out intended for Broadway. While some of the biggest Broadway shows begin with out-of-town tryouts in cities like Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles—including this season's Pretty Woman, The Cher Show, and Tootsie—many begin as smaller, Off-Broadway productions that find such popularity that a Broadway transfer becomes inevitable.
