Hal Prince staged the original London production of Evita in 1978, which launched the career of actress Elaine Paige. The musical, also under Prince's direction, transferred to Broadway in 1979, with Patti LuPone in the title role. The role also solidified LuPone's status as a Broadway star and garnered the actress her first Tony Award. A 1996 film adaptation starred pop icon "Madonna" and the 2006 London revival, with Argentinean actress Elena Roger in the title role, is aiming for a 2012 Broadway bow. Ricky Martin has been announced to co-star with Roger.

The original Broadway production of Evita earned Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Direction, Best Actress (LuPone), Best Featured Actor (Mandy Patinkin) and Best Lighting Design.
