Next up in the acclaimed "Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert" series of concert stagings of Broadway classics: The Boys From Syracuse, a 1938 musical by George Abbott (book), Richard Rodgers (music) and Lorenz Hart (lyrics). This reworking of William Shakespeare's A Comedy Of Errors has yet to announce an official creative team or cast, but Theatrical Index (April 7) lists Danny Burstein, Davis Gaines (Phantom Of The Opera), Malcolm Gets and Rebecca Luker as "mentioned for featured roles." The show will run May 1-4 at NYC's City Center. Shakespeare's tale of two sets of long-separated twins was also the inspiration for the musical, Oh, Brother!. The Boys score includes "This Can't Be Love," "Falling in Love With Love" and "Sing for Your Supper."
The Boys From Syracuse was among musicals suggested for the 1997 season by members of Playbill On-Line in a July 1996 Playbill Poll, but several other favorites, including Carrie and The Golden Apple will have to wait until another season.
Recent well-received Encores! shows have included Sweet Adeline, Promises Promises and the Broadway smash, Chicago.
