News Who Won During First Day of Broadway Brackets? Plus, vote now for Round One, Division 2009-2016.
Voting for Round One, Division 2001-2008 of Broadway Brackets 2017 is now complete, and the winners are in. We asked theatre fans to vote for the Tony-winning musicals they loved best, and here are the results from the initial round of voting.

Similar to its historic 2004 Tony win over Wicked, the quirky tuner Avenue Q again delivered a surprising upset—this time narrowly beating out The Producers in its match-up. Avenue Q won with 1.74K (50.1%) votes over The Producers with 1.73K (49.9%) votes.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2008 musical In the Heights beat out the coming-of-age musical Spring Awakening—taking 2.02K (59%) votes compared to 1.39K (41%); the long-running hit Jersey Boys won its match-up over Spamalot, beating it out with 1.71K (52%) votes compared to 1.59K (48%) votes. The round’s biggest win went to Hairspray with 2.45K (74%) votes, taking out Thoroughly Modern Millie with 859 (26%) votes.

Voting for Round One, Division 2009-2016 continues through March 15 at 10 AM ET. Voting for Round Two begins at noon March 15.
