While no official announcement has been made, Cabaret composer John Kander confirmed to the New York Times that Cumming was attached to star in a 2014 Broadway revival for the Roundabout Theatre Company.

The news sparked several reports of who would nab the delectable central role of Sally Bowles in the revival of the 1966 classic – including Anne Hathaway (whose reps stated she would not star) and "Easy A" star Emma Stone.

Our readers responded strongly to the various casting reports, and Playbill.com decided to open up the dialogue to allow them to share their picks for whom they'd like to see play Sally – a role originated by Jill Haworth, and later played by such actresses as Judi Dench, Liza Minnelli, Natasha Richardson and more.

Nina Arianda

Leeheek: I would LOVE to see Nina Arianda. Think she'd be beyond incredible.
Scott Richard: Yeah, I'm pretty sure Nina Arianda would be PERFECT! Make this happen.

Numerous readers picked the acclaimed, Tony-winning Venus in Fur star, who rose to fame with her break-out role as the mysterious and sexy Vanda in David Ives' steamy two-hander.

Anna Kendrick

BJPsez: Anna Kendrick as Sally Bowles.

Kendrick made her Broadway debut in High Society and showed her naughty side in a "Don't Tell Mama"-inspired take on "Life Upon the Wicked Stage" during My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies at Carnegie Hall. She's also making a name for herself on the big screen, with "Camp," "Pitch Perfect" and the upcoming "Last Five Years."

Carey Mulligan

LauraStar663: Carey Mulligan is so hot right now in Gatsby I think she would make a terrific Sally Bowles! Don't u think?
Alexandra Barnes: It's an audacious role that's needs a true ingenue. I vote Carey Mulligan.

Mulligan earned acclaim for her appearance in Through a Glass Darkly last season and stars as Daisy in Baz Lurhmann's high-octane film remake of "The Great Gatsby." The British actress (which could make her a suitable fit for Sally) is an Academy Award nominee for "An Education."

Daisy Eagan
Tim Stuff: Daisy Eagan...she needs to come back to Broadway.

It would be exciting to see Eagan return to the New York stage after winning the Best Featured Actress in a Musical Tony Award at the age of 12 for The Secret Garden. She hasn't appeared on Broadway since James Joyce's The Dead in 2000, and this juicy role might be enough to tempt the actress – and soon to be mother – back to the eight-show-a-week grind.

Megan Hilty

charmedtj: Megan Hilty should play Sally.

"Smash" and Wicked star Hilty was another top pick among our readers. The blonde bombshell, who stars in the fictional Bombshell on "Smash," would surely sing Sally's signature songs to the rafters.

Jessie Mueller
ginaway1: No question: JESSIE MUELLER! She'd be a divine and powerful Sally Bowles.

Tony Award nominee Jessie Mueller also has many admirers who want to see her tackle the role of Sally. Mueller has the acting and the vocal chops – she belted her way through On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, and didn't skip a beat (or a note) when she slipped into such varied productions as Into the Woods, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and, most recently, the New York Philharmonic presentation of Carousel.

Lady Gaga
Jessica Floyd: I'm going with Lady Gaga
Jay Chasland: Lady Gaga would be insane and genius
Judy Capuano: OMG Lady Gaga would be fantastic! She has the voice and the right edginess...

Lady Gaga, or Stefani Germanotta, as she was known when she played Adelaide in her high school production of Guys and Dolls, has the edge and sensitivity to play Sally. She's also got the vocal chops — the native New Yorker has performed songs from the American songbook, including an unadorned rendition of "Someone to Watch Over Me," backed by piano and a trumpet soloist on "The Today Show," and "Orange Colored Sky" on her 2011 holiday special.

Sutton Foster

Madison Clarke: Sutton Foster! She would slay that role
724Debra: Sutton Foster #SallyBowles

Tony Award winner Foster would venture into darker territory as Sally. It would definitely be fun to see the Millie, Shrek and Anything Goes star strut her way through the Kander and Ebb material.

Krysta Rodriguez
Pieter Bruegel I'll vote for Krysta Rodriguez.

Rodgriguez has quite a belt and proved it by nailing the rangy Andrew Lippa song "Pulled" night after night as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family on Broadway – no easy task. She's also garnering national attention on "Smash" – and come on, she's already got that fabulous Sally Bowles hair.

Idina Menzel
Judi Urdiales: Idina Menzel!!
Glenn_Hoy: Idina Menzel

The Tony-winning Wicked star was another popular choice among readers – but it looks like Menzel is already committed to the new Tom Kitt-Brian Yorkey musical If/Then for next season. But we can still hear Menzel belting "Maybe This Time."

Audra McDonald
Andrew Victor Myers: AUDRA MCDONALD it's her dream role!

The five-time Tony Award winner could set out to collect another honor playing Sally – a part she has confessed is a dream role. It would surely shake-up traditional expectations of Cabaret, and watching McDonald and Cumming together on stage would make for a thrilling night of theatre.

Ruthie Henshall
Darren Wagner: Ruthie Henshall

British actress Ruthie Henshall would make a meal out of Sally. She's charted Kander and Ebb territory before in Chicago and has performed a stellar "Maybe This Time" in concert. She also hasn't been seen on Broadway since Putting It Together in 2000. We'd love to have her back!

Zooey Deschanel

Annie Fraley: Zooey Deschanel

Deschanel would make a quirky and cool Sally. The "New Girl" star, best known for her off-beat comedy, is also a singer-songwriter - and performs regularly. She was also tapped by country singer Loretta Lynn to play her in a stage musical adaptation of "Coal Miner's Daughter." Cabaret would mark her Broadway debut.

Stephanie J. Block
Meredith Yannuzzi: Love Emma Stone, but could we please get a beautiful Broadway star like Stephanie J. Block...

Tony Award nominee Block would be an exciting choice for Sally - with a voice that can carry the role of Elphaba in Wicked to the challenges of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. She's also a Roundabout favorite, having performed in their revivals of Drood and Anything Goes to acclaim.

Harvey Fierstein
Honorable mentions for reader picks include Kate Winslet, Lea Michele, Kelly Clarkson, Rose Hemmingway, Lindsay Mendez, Mandy Gonzalez, Laura Benanti, Jennifer Lawrence - and believe it or not, we got a bunch of votes for the one and only Harvey Fierstein.
