Franklin, 73, told Billboard, "I would like to see it be a dramatic musical. I loved The Motown Musical [Motown]; it was so great. I think the timing is very good now, especially behind Jersey Boys, Carole King [Beautiful]. Gloria Estefan has come to Broadway now [On Your Feet] and why not Aretha?"

Franklin told the magazine that she's discussing the artistic side of the project with award-winning actress-director Marsha Mason, whom Franklin said is "very amenable and would love to do it."

For the business side, Franklin said she hopes to meet with master record producer Clive Davis as a backer.

Several ideas for Franklin musicals have been discussed over the years, including a 2007 project in Detroit that got as far as the casting stage.

The source material for that production was the R&B/soul/pop legend's 1999 memoir, "Aretha: From These Roots." AP reported that Franklin would assist in casting and that performers would play her at various ages. There was no word on any connection between the 2007 show and the new one.

One way or another, Franklin seems to want her life story told. In 2014 she gave an interview saying she hoped Audra McDonald would play her in film biography. More recently Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, soon to be starring on Broadway in The Color Purple, was also reported to be in talks to do the biopic.
