Mormon was penned by "South Park" co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker and Avenue Q Tony winner Robert Lopez. Parker will co-direct the production with The Drowsy Chaperone's Casey Nicholaw, who is also choreographing.

Lead producers are Scott Rudin and Anne Garefino; the latter is an executive at Comedy Central, the network that airs "South Park."

Book of Mormon, according to the New York daily, "follows two young Mormon missionaries who are shipped off to a dangerous part of Uganda to spread the good word. Their adventures are told alongside the story of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church."

A recent backers' audition featured Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad as the young Mormons. The Post says many who attended the audition were doubled over with laughter.

No official announcement about the production has been made.
