Radar Online states that Abdul, who made a much-publicized exit from "American Idol" this past year, would replace Tony Award winner Priscilla Lopez (A Chorus Line) as the fiery Camila, who performs the song "Enough" in the second act of the musical.
A source tells Radar that Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical"), who will direct the film of In the Heights, is keen on having Abdul join the Broadway cast. “Ortega is hot to have her choreograph the film version," the anonymous source told Radar. Andy Blankenbuehler earned a Tony Award for his choreography of the Broadway production.
Abdul attended a performance of In the Heights on Broadway March 16 and Tweeted: "In the Heights" was fantastic last night!! Had a wonderful time and was great to see my friend Kenny Ortega!"
As previously reported, Tony-winning In the Heights original star and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda is slated to repeat his work in the film.
Abdul's albums include "Forever Your Girl," "Spellbound" and "Head Over Heals." In addition to her recording career, Abdul is an accomplished choreographer, having created pieces for Janet Jackson and the infamous keyboard scene from the film "Big." In the Heights currently stars "High School Musical" veteran Corbin Bleu, who has extended his Broadway contract an additional three months through July 25.
No official announcement about Abdul has been made.
