Unlike the Tony Awards, the American Theatre Wing Design Awards honor Broadway, as well as Off and Off-Off Broadway achievements in design.

The 1996 winners are: Scenic Design: Christopher Barreca (Chronicle Of A Death Foretold) Costume Design: Angela Ward (Rent) Lighting Design: Jules Fisher/Peggy Eisenhauer (Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk).

Noteworthy Unusual Effects: Julie Archer (for her puppets, Rose the Dog & Sri Moo), and Karen Ten Eyck (for projections in An Epidog).

Winners will receive citations at 2PM, Oct. 24 at The American Theatre Wing's Design Seminar, at City University of NY's Graduate Center on West 42nd St.

The American Theatre Wing Design Awards are now in their 32nd year (they used to be called the "Maharams"). Judges for this year were Tish Dace (Chair), critics Jeremy Gerard, Alexis Greene, Henry Hewes and Joan Ungaro, and playwright/critic Jeffrey Sweet. -- By David Lefkowitz
