The double-bill, which premiered at Stratford-upon-Avon's Swan Theatre in January, transferred to the Aldwych in May, where they began performances May 1 prior to an official opening May 16. They have been brought to the West End by producers Matthew Byam Shaw, Nia Janis and Nick Salmon and the Royal Shakespeare Company, Tulchin Bartner and Georgia Gatti for Playful.
Mike Poulton's adaptations of the books were commissioned by Playful Productions and brought to the stage by the RSC, working in collaboration with Playful.
The two plays tell the compelling story of Thomas Cromwell’s rise from blacksmith’s boy to Henry VIII’s chief fixer and deliverer of the King’s chosen bedfellows.
The cast includes Ben Miles as Cromwell, Nathaniel Parker as Henry VIII, Lydia Leonard as Anne Boleyn, Paul Jesson as Cardinal Wolsey and Lucy Briers as Katherine of Aragon.
The productions are directed by Jeremy Herrin, with sets and costumes by Christopher Oram. Lighting for Wolf Hall is by Paule Constable, with lighting for Bring Up the Bodies by David Plater. Music is by Stephen Warbeck, with sound by Nick Powell, movement by Siân Williams and fights by Bret Yount.
