Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza) will direct the world premiere of Women on the Verge, which was penned by Tony-nominated Dirty Rotten Scoundrels collaborators David Yazbek (music and lyrics) and Jeffrey Lane (book). Pedro Almodóvar wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated 1988 film on which the musical is based.

Tickets will go on sale to Lincoln Center Theater members Aug. 23, followed by a release to the general public Aug. 30. Women on the Verge will begin previews at the newly-renovated Belasco Theatre Oct. 2 towards a Nov. 4 Broadway opening.

As previously reported, the cast will also feature Tony nominees Danny Burstein (South Pacific) and de'Adre Aziza (Passing Strange), as well as Mary Beth Peil (Nine, Sunday in the Park With George) and Nikka Graff Lanzarone (Seussical).

The Oscar-nominated film centers on Pepa (Scott), a voice-over actress on a mission to deliver an important secret to her philandering boyfriend, Iván (Mitchell). A two-day chase ensues, involving Iván's mentally insane wife Lucía (LuPone), who has been recently released from a mental institution and is hunting down the father of her child and his mistress for one last confrontation. The plot involves an unstable best friend, Shiite terrorists, a mambo-loving taxi driver (Burstein), a hostage motorcycle driver, gazpacho laced with sleeping pills and a charred bed.

Aziza is cast as Paulina, Lucía's lawyer; Lanzarone will be Marisa, the fiancé of Lucía and Iván's son Carlos; and Peil will portray the Concierge. The key roles of Candela and Carlos have not been announced. Women on the Verge will have choreography by Christopher Gattelli, musical direction by Jim Abbott, sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Brian MacDevitt and sound by Scott Lehrer. The musical reunites the Tony Award-winning creative team from LCT's South Pacific, with the addition of MacDevitt and Abbott.
