News Won't You Charleston?: Julie Andrews-Directed Boy Friend Opens at Bay Street Aug. 9 The Bay Street Theatre's production of The Boy Friend, which boasts direction by Academy Award winner Julie Andrews, officially opens on Aug. 9, after previews from Aug. 5.

Andrews, of course, Broadway-debuted in the original 1954 production of the Sandy Wilson musical. As previously announced, Meredith Patterson will play Andrews' role (Polly) with Sean Palmer as her star-struck love interest. Veanne Cox will portray the French maid, Byron Jennings is a proper Englishman, Nancy Hess is Madame Dubonnet, Tony Roberts is the lecherous Lord and Delphi Harrington is his aristocratic wife.

The company will also include Paul Alexander, Justin Bohon, Joyce Chittick, Andrea Chamberlain, Jenny Fellner, Rick Faugno, Mark Price, Annie Ramsey and Neal Shrader.

The Bay Street production of The Boy Friend — running to Aug. 31 — will mark Andrews' debut as a director. In a statement, the beloved actress said, "It's important for me to take this step in a place that is close to my heart, and now Target Stores [the production's exclusive sponsor] have made this possible . . . . There is something magical about Bay Street. Actors and directors just love being there. The positive energy is palpable, the productions are first rate and rival those in New York." Bay Street is run, in part, by Emma Walton, Andrews' daughter.

The creative team for the musical includes Larry Grossman (musical direction), John DeLuca (choreography), Tony Walton (sets), Walton and Rachel Gruer (costumes) and Eric Schlobohm (lights). The Boy Friend will play Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8 PM, selected Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4 PM and Sundays at 7 PM.

Tickets — priced $50-$60 — are available by calling (631) 725-9500 or by logging on to www.baystreet.org. The Bay Street Theatre is located in Sag Harbor, New York.
