Matthew Marsh and Eleanor David take on the lead roles of Harriet and Max Villiers, who host a Halloween party at their North London home. Anna Mackmin makes her Almeida directorial debut. According to production notes, Max is a “celebrity ghost writer.” After installing his new plasma television, the evening is “hijacked by interference from the past.”
Marsh was last seen at the Almeida in Albee’s The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? and Reza’s Conversations After a Burial. More recently, he appeared in JT Rogers’ The Overwhelming at the National. Other stage credits include The Little Foxes at the Donmar.
The cast for The Lightning Play also includes Adie Allen, Christina Cole, Lloyd Hutchinson, Simon Kassianides, Katherine Parkinson and Orlando Seale.
Jones’ best-known play is Humble Boy, which in London won her a Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play, and a Drama Desk nomination for the same category in New York. Other credits include In Flame and The Dark. Jones also wrote the book for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman in White. Mackmin recently made her National Theatre directorial debut with Gearing’s Burn, Ravenhill’s Citizenship and Walsh’s Chatroom. Other credits include Auntie and Me at the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre.
